Ailanthus
Made from the tree of heaven — the fast-growing immigrant of the world's cities, and the classical remedy of the dark, malignant throat of the diphtheria era.
The whole picture, in one breath
Think of a throat turning dusky and dark: malignant sore throat with the dusky, dark-red membrane of the old books, great prostration out of proportion, the books' great remedy of the diphtheria wards — from the tree that grew over every city wall. The dark-throat remedy: that is Ailanthus.
The substance, in plain words
The tree of heaven is the fast-growing ailanthus of Asia, spread across the world's cities as the tree that grows anywhere — and the proving gave the tree the diphtheria-era portrait: the dark throat, the great prostration, the malignant states the old wards knew too well.
The traditional picture Classical sources
The inner state
- Anxiety and fear. Fear of death with the throat's closing, worse at night.
- Restlessness and prostration. The books record the restless weakness — the mind anxious, the body sinking.
- Dullness. Heavy mind with the low, malignant state.
The body
- Dusky, dark-red throat. The keynote: the dark, dusky-red throat and membrane of the books' malignant chapter.
- Prostration out of proportion. The great sinking with the throat — the books' warning sign.
- Swollen glands and neck. The cervical glands swelling with the throat complaint.
- Low, drowsy states. The books add the drowsy, sinking state of the malignant fevers.
- Worse cold damp and night. Wet weather and night deepen the darkening throat.
- Better for rest and quiet. Rest and quiet support the sinking powers.

Where the classical picture comes from
The city tree's proving gave the dark-throat portrait; Ailanthus became the classical remedy of the diphtheria era's malignant throat — the tree over the city wall serving the wards it shaded.
The substance in real medicine Pharmacology
What this section is: the pharmacology and toxicology of the source substance. It is not clinical evidence that a homeopathic preparation of it treats any condition. What controlled trials do and do not show is set out on the Evidence page.
Diphtheria itself is the real story: the dark-membrane disease of the old wards was met by antitoxin in the 1890s and vaccination after — one of immunology's earliest and cleanest triumphs. The ailanthus's real modern career is horticultural; the disease its remedy portrayed is a vaccine-preventable memory. The tree and the triumph both stand.
Look-alikes (how the classical authors told it apart)
| Remedy | Looks similar because… | Tells it apart because… |
|---|---|---|
| Lac caninum | Diphtheria-era throats | Lac caninum crosses sides; Ailanthus darkens and sinks. |
| Mercurius solubilis | Throat and offensiveness | Mercurius is sweaty and foul; Ailanthus dark, dusky and sinking. |
| Kali bichromicum | Membranous throat | Kali-bich's membrane is stringy and punched-out; Ailanthus's dark and malignant. |
| Apis mellifica | Throat swelling | Apis is rosy and puffy; Ailanthus dark and sinking. |
