Apis mellifica
Made from the honeybee's venom — melittin, the membrane-piercing peptide, and the source of the only true cure for bee-sting allergy.
The whole picture, in one breath
Think of rosy-pink, puffy, stinging swelling — of an eyelid, a throat, a joint or the whole face — burning and stinging like a fresh sting, with little thirst, and striking relief from cold compresses. Pink, puffy, stinging, thirstless and cold-better: that is Apis.
The substance, in plain words
Honeybee venom is a cocktail of peptides, above all melittin, which punches holes in cell membranes, and phospholipase, which spreads the damage. The same venom, given in graded doses as venom immunotherapy, is modern medicine's cure for life-threatening bee-sting allergy.
The traditional picture Classical sources
The inner state
- Jealousy and busy fussiness. The books paint an abrupt, jealous, hard-to-please state — with sudden tears or sudden apathy.
- Nervous agitation. Whining restlessness; fear of death at twilight in the swelling states.
- Dullness in fever. Sleepy, heavy, half-stupid in hot complaints — unlike the Arsenicum terror.
The body
- Rosy-pink swelling. The keynote: smooth, shiny, rosy (not red like Belladonna, not purple like Lachesis), pitting oedema of eyelids, lips, throat.
- Stinging, burning pains. As of bee-stings — burning, stinging, with soreness to touch.
- Thirstlessness. Scarcely drinks even in fever — a major differential against Arsenicum.
- Better for cold. Cold air, cold compresses, cold drinks relieve — the opposite of Arsenicum's heat-craving.
- Scanty urine. The books pair Apis swelling with diminished, dark urine — dropsical states.
- Throat and diphtheria states. Puffy, rosy throat with stinging, difficulty swallowing fluids, no thirst.
Modalities (worse and better factors)
| Worse from ⬇ | Better from ⬇ |
|---|---|
| heat of any kind; hot rooms and drinks; touch and pressure; late afternoon; right side. | cold applications; open cool air; uncovering; bathing the part in cold water. |
Where it acts (organ affinities)
Skin and mucous membranes (oedematous swellings), kidneys and urine, throat, serous membranes.
Where the classical picture comes from
The proving with bee venom reproduced its own pharmacology: swelling, stinging, burning, relief from cold. Clinicians then applied it to every oedematous, sting-like state, from hives to swollen eyelids to dropsy.
The substance in real medicine Pharmacology
What this section is: the pharmacology and toxicology of the source substance. It is not clinical evidence that a homeopathic preparation of it treats any condition. What controlled trials do and do not show is set out on the Evidence page.
Bee venom's melittin is actively researched as a targeted anti-cancer agent in laboratory models because of its membrane-destroying precision. And the venom's greatest medical triumph is immunological: venom immunotherapy — years of micro-doses of the very venom — desensitises patients with life-threatening bee allergy, one of allergy medicine's true cures.
Look-alikes (how the classical authors told it apart)
| Remedy | Looks similar because… | Tells it apart because… |
|---|---|---|
| Arsenicum album | Anxiety, burning, swelling | Arsenicum is chilly, thirsty for sips and heat-craving; Apis is thirstless and cold-better with rosy swelling. |
| Belladonna | Throat, sudden inflammation | Belladonna is scarlet-red, hot and dry; Apis is rosy-pink, puffy and stinging. |
| Cantharis | Burning, blistering | Cantharis burns and blisters with fierce urinary urging; Apis stings and puffs with thirstlessness. |
| Rhus toxicodendron | Vesicles, swollen joints | Rhus is red, hot, itchy and worse for rest; Apis is rosy, smooth, stinging and cold-better. |
