Graphites
Made from graphite — the soft grey carbon of pencils, greasy to the touch, and the classical remedy of the sticky, oozing skin.
The whole picture, in one breath
Think of a stout, chilly person whose skin weeps a thick, sticky, honey-coloured fluid: eczema behind the ears and at the bends, raw oozing surfaces, cracked lips and fingertips, deformed thickened nails, and a general reluctance to decide. Sticky oozing, cracked skin, obesity, indecision: that is Graphites.
The substance, in plain words
Graphite is pure crystalline carbon — pencil lead, lubricant, crucible lining. Its greasy softness is the plant's (well, mineral's) signature; in the classical library it is the great 'oozing eczema' remedy of stout constitutions.
The traditional picture Classical sources
The inner state
- Indecision and hesitation. The mental keynote: cannot decide, postpones, distrusts one's own judgment; timid yielding.
- Sadness in the morning. Low on waking, improves as the day advances; weeps at music.
- Obstinacy about trifles. Fixed on small decisions, avoids big ones — the books' portrait of a plodding mind.
The body
- Sticky honey-like oozing. The keynote: thick, gluey, honey-coloured discharge from eczema, behind ears, eyelids, bends of limbs.
- Cracks and fissures. Deep raw cracks at the corners of the mouth, on the fingertips, between toes; bleed easily.
- Nail deformity. Thickened, distorted, painful nails; the classical nail remedy with Silicea.
- Stout, chilly build. Obesity tendency, cold feet, tendency to skin tags and sluggish circulation.
- Left-sidedness. Complaints begin on the left; left ovary, left side of neck and chest.
- Skin worse warmth. Eruptions worse from warmth of the bed and from contact with clothing.
Modalities (worse and better factors)

Where it acts (organ affinities)
Skin (oozing, cracked), nails, female organs (left), nutrition and obesity.
Where the classical picture comes from
Carbon's greasy inertness gave the proving little drama — but the remedy's fame is clinical, built on the oozing eczemas and cracked skins of the pre-steroid era, where the sticky honey-like discharge was its calling card.
The substance in real medicine Pharmacology
What this section is: the pharmacology and toxicology of the source substance. It is not clinical evidence that a homeopathic preparation of it treats any condition. What controlled trials do and do not show is set out on the Evidence page.
Graphite is industrially vital — electrodes, lubricants, batteries, pencil cores — and carbon itself is the chemistry of life. Its medical echoes are indirect: carbon-based occlusives and coal-tar products (whose carbon chemistry treats psoriasis and eczema to this day) are graphite's chemical neighbourhood in real dermatology.
Look-alikes (how the classical authors told it apart)
| Remedy | Looks similar because… | Tells it apart because… |
|---|---|---|
| Petroleum | Winter eczema, cracked skin | Petroleum cracks bleed in winter cold; Graphites oozes sticky fluid year-round in the stout and indecisive. |
| Psorinum | Offensive eruptions, chilliness | Psorinum is freezing, filthy and winter-worse; Graphites is chilly, sticky and indecisive. |
| Silicea | Nails, chilliness | Silicea is the fine-boned, sweaty, slow-healing one; Graphites the stout, oozing, cracked one. |
| Sulphur | Eczema, heat | Sulphur is hot, red, itchy and bath-hating; Graphites is chilly and oozing. |
