Acidum benzoicum
Made from benzoic acid — the urinary antiseptic of the old pharmacopoeias, still present in medicine as sodium benzoate, and the classical remedy of strong-smelling urine with gout.
The whole picture, in one breath
Think of urine that announces itself: dark, hot, offensive-smelling urine that irritates everything it passes; joint pains that shift with the bladder trouble; and the combination — gouty joints and urinary symptoms together — that the old books called the benzoic constitution. Strong-smelling urine with wandering joints: that is Benzoicum acidum.
The substance, in plain words
Benzoic acid is the preservative chemistry of berries and resins — official as a urinary antiseptic of the old pharmacopoeias, given when the urine needed disinfecting, and still present in medicine as sodium benzoate for metabolic disorders. The proving gave the remedy its urinary-gout portrait.
The traditional picture Classical sources
The inner state
- Dullness and heaviness. Foggy, heavy-minded with the bladder and joint states; the books note the dull uraemic shade.
- Anxiety about health. Worry over the returning attacks.
- Irritability. Cross, worse in damp weather.
The body
- Offensive, strong-smelling urine. The keynote: dark, hot, ammoniacal urine whose smell fills the room — the books' most quoted urinary sign.
- Gouty joints with urinary symptoms. The pairing: wandering articular pains that come and go with the bladder trouble.
- Irritation of the passages. Burning and smarting at every passage, the urine hot and acrid.
- Asthma association. The books add the respiratory link — the gouty, urinary, asthmatic constitution.
- Worse damp cold and night. Wet weather and night aggravate both systems.
- Better for rest Warmth and rest between attacks ease both the joints and the urine.
Modalities (worse and better factors)
| Worse from ⬇ | Better from ⬇ |
|---|---|
| cold damp weather; night; rich food; wine. | warmth; rest; the urine's improvement. |
Where it acts (organ affinities)
Urinary tract (bladder, urethra, kidneys), joints (gouty), respiration (asthmatic link), urine.
Where the classical picture comes from
The official urinary antiseptic's career — disinfecting the urine when infection meant suffering — gave the proving its frame; the remedy became the classical portrait of the gouty-urinary-asthmatic constitution, its strong-smelling urine the most quoted sign in the urinary chapter.
The substance in real medicine Pharmacology
What this section is: the pharmacology and toxicology of the source substance. It is not clinical evidence that a homeopathic preparation of it treats any condition. What controlled trials do and do not show is set out on the Evidence page.
Benzoic acid was a genuine urinary antiseptic of the pharmacopoeias, and its sodium salt remains a real medicine — used in metabolic disorders of the urea cycle to this day. The gout it accompanied is now managed with allopurinol and urate-lowering drugs, among the most effective of modern therapeutics; the urine it disinfected is now antibiotics after culture.
Look-alikes (how the classical authors told it apart)
| Remedy | Looks similar because… | Tells it apart because… |
|---|---|---|
| Uva ursi | Urinary antiseptics | Uva ursi is the chronic mucous catarrh; Benzoic the strong-smelling, gouty, asthmatic constitution. |
| Lithium carbonicum | Gouty constitution | Lithium-carb is the uric-acid diathesis remedy of the old books; Benzoic pairs it with the offensive urine. |
| Colchicum autumnale | Gouty swellings | Colchicum is the agonising, swell-and-weep gout; Benzoic the wandering urinary-linked one. |
| Terebinthina | Urinary inflammation | Terebinth is the bloody, tympanitic, systemic one; Benzoic the gouty-smelling one. |
