Kali iodatum
Made from potassium iodide — the iodine salt that was medicine's first effective syphilis treatment and remains a real expectorant, with 'iodism' as its toxic twin.
The whole picture, in one breath
Think of hot, sweaty, wandering states: profuse hot sweating that does not relieve, wandering periosteal pains that jump from bone to bone, sinuses that discharge green and corrosive, and a constitution that burns at night. Hot sweats, wandering bone pains, corrosive catarrh: that is Kali iodatum.
The substance, in plain words
Potassium iodide is a real, historic drug: the first effective treatment for late syphilis, a working expectorant, and the salt that taught medicine 'iodism' — the streaming catarrh, acne and brassy taste of iodine overload. Few remedies carry so much genuine pharmacology on both sides.
The traditional picture Classical sources
The inner state
- Irritability and anxiety. Cross, worried, worse at night; the books paint the syphilitic-mercurial temperament of the era.
- Restlessness with pain. Must move with the wandering bone pains, yet movement tires.
- Low spirits. Gloom accompanies the chronic draining states.
The body
- Hot sweating without relief. The keynote: profuse, hot sweat day and night that brings no comfort.
- Wandering periosteal pains. Bone pains that jump from tibia to skull to wrist, worse at night — the legacy of the syphilitic periostitis it treated.
- Corrosive green catarrh. Fetid, green, burning nasal discharge, crusts, sinus pain at the root of the nose.
- Worse heat. Hot rooms and the bed's warmth aggravate — the reverse of the chilly catarrh remedies.
- Swollen glands and ulcers. Glands that harden and ulcerate; punched-out sores of the old books.
- Better cold and open air. Cool air and cool cloths ease the burning; uncovering relieves.
Modalities (worse and better factors)
| Worse from ⬇ | Better from ⬇ |
|---|---|
| heat and warm rooms; night; suppressed discharges; mercury over-medication (classical). | cold air; uncovering; open air. |
Where it acts (organ affinities)
Bones and periosteum, mucous membranes (corrosive catarrh), glands, skin (acne of iodism).
Where the classical picture comes from
Potassium iodide's real career — syphilis, expectoration, iodism — wrote the remedy's portrait almost before the proving: hot sweat, wandering bone pain, corrosive catarrh are the drug's documented effects at working doses.
The substance in real medicine Pharmacology
What this section is: the pharmacology and toxicology of the source substance. It is not clinical evidence that a homeopathic preparation of it treats any condition. What controlled trials do and do not show is set out on the Evidence page.
Potassium iodide is still a real medicine: SSKI serves as an expectorant, in thyroid storm, as radiation-blocking potassium iodide after nuclear accidents, and in sporotrichosis (rose-handler's disease) — a genuine, specific antifungal use. Its toxic twin, iodism, remains textbook pharmacology. The salt is one of the library's most decorated real drugs.
Look-alikes (how the classical authors told it apart)
| Remedy | Looks similar because… | Tells it apart because… |
|---|---|---|
| Arsenicum iodatum | Hot restlessness, glands | Ars-iod is the Arsenicum-anxious, heat-worse remedy; Kali-iod is the sweating, bone-pain, corrosive one. |
| Mercurius solubilis | Offensive catarrh, glands | Mercurius is sweaty, foul and trembling; Kali-iod hot, wandering and iodine-flavoured. |
| Hepar sulphuris | Glands, ulcers | Hepar's are touchy and early-suppurating; Kali-iod's harden, wander and corrode. |
| Aurum iodatum | Iodide family, bone and nose | Aur-iod combines proud despair with the iodide catarrh; Kali-iod keeps the hot sweat and wandering bones. |
