Kali muriaticum
Made from potassium chloride — common salt substitute and hospital electrolyte, and the biochemic 'salt of the second stage of inflammation'.
The whole picture, in one breath
Think of inflammation paused at the white stage: congestion that should have resolved but instead has stalled — white-coated tongue, white mucus, glandular swellings, and everything whitish, thick and stationary. White discharges, second-stage congestion: that is Kali muriaticum.
The substance, in plain words
Potassium chloride is a completely ordinary salt — water-softener, salt substitute, and intravenous electrolyte in every hospital. The biochemic school made it the remedy of the 'second stage' of catarrh and swelling, where the process has turned white and stuck.
The traditional picture Classical sources
The inner state
- Anxiety with the swelling. Worried, worse at night, children fretful with the glandular complaints.
- Irritability. Crossness in the congested, catarrhal states.
- Forgetfulness. The books note foggy thinking with the chronic catarrh.
The body
- White stage of inflammation. The keynote: congestion that has stalled into the white stage — thick white mucus, white-coated tongue, pale swellings.
- Glandular swellings. Tonsils, adenoids, cervical glands — swollen, pale, persistent; the children's ear-nose-throat remedy of the biochemic shelf.
- White discharges. White mucus from nose, throat and ear; eczema with white crusts.
- Deafness of catarrh. Blocked Eustachian tubes, ear pressure with the thick white catarrh.
- Worse rich food and damp. The congestion thickens after milk and pastry, in wet weather.
- Better for cold air Open air and loosening of the diet ease the thick congestion.
Modalities (worse and better factors)
| Worse from ⬇ | Better from ⬇ |
|---|---|
| rich food; damp cold weather; suppressed discharges; night. | open air; loosening of clothing; fasting from rich food. |
Where it acts (organ affinities)
Mucous membranes (second-stage catarrh), glands and tonsils, ears, skin (white-crusted eczema).
Where the classical picture comes from
The biochemic school framed Kali-mur as the salt of the white, second stage of inflammation — congestion that neither flushes red (Ferr-phos) nor suppurates (Silicea). Its portrait is the stalled, whitish catarrh of the tonsil-and-adenoid child.
The substance in real medicine Pharmacology
What this section is: the pharmacology and toxicology of the source substance. It is not clinical evidence that a homeopathic preparation of it treats any condition. What controlled trials do and do not show is set out on the Evidence page.
Potassium chloride is a genuine hospital drug: IV potassium replacement saves lives in heart and kidney disease daily. That the salt is life-essential is not in question — the remedy's modest portrait simply reminds us the chemistry belongs to physiology, and the catarrhs it painted are today managed with antihistamines, steroids and, where needed, surgery.
Look-alikes (how the classical authors told it apart)
| Remedy | Looks similar because… | Tells it apart because… |
|---|---|---|
| Ferrum phosphoricum | First-stage congestion | Ferr-phos is the red, flushed, first-stage fever salt; Kali-mur the stalled white second stage. |
| Kali sulphuricum | Yellow third stage | Kali-sulph is the yellow, wandering discharge salt; Kali-mur the white stationary one. |
| Kali bichromicum | Thick mucus | Kali-bich's mucus is ropy and stringy with punched ulcers; Kali-mur's is white and bland. |
| Calcarea carbonica | Glandular children | Calcarea is the sour-sweating, egg-craving, flabby child; Kali-mur simply the white congested glands. |
