Kalmia latifolia

Made from mountain laurel — the American woodland shrub of the same grayanotoxin family as mad honey, once an official rheumatic drug, and the classical remedy of the descending neuralgia and the rheumatic heart.

The whole picture, in one breath

Think of pains that march downward: neuralgia that starts at the upper body and descends — shoulder to elbow to wrist — shifting suddenly from joint to joint, with the rheumatic heart fluttering behind it, worse for motion, and a strange relief from eating. The descending, shifting neuralgia: that is Kalmia.

The substance, in plain words

Mountain laurel is the pink-flowered woodland shrub of the American east, its grayanotoxins kin to the mad-honey chemistry — genuinely neuroactive and dangerous. It was an official drug of the old American school for rheumatism, with documented use in acute rheumatism; the proving gave the remedy its descending, shifting, cardiac portrait.

Where the classical picture comes from

The official rheumatic shrub's proving gave the descending, shifting, cardiac portrait; Kalmia became the classical remedy of the rheumatic neuralgia and the fluttering heart behind it, read in the era when every joint pain feared the heart.

The substance in real medicine Pharmacology

What this section is: the pharmacology and toxicology of the source substance. It is not clinical evidence that a homeopathic preparation of it treats any condition. What controlled trials do and do not show is set out on the Evidence page.

Mountain laurel's grayanotoxins are genuinely neuroactive — the same mad-honey chemistry as Rhododendron's, documented toxicology — and the shrub's official career in acute rheumatism is real, if retired. The rheumatic fever it accompanied is now prevented by treating streptococcal throat with antibiotics — one of the great quiet victories of twentieth-century medicine.

Look-alikes (how the classical authors told it apart)

RemedyLooks similar because…Tells it apart because…
Rhododendron chrysanthumStorm-sensitive, better eatingRhododendron is the barometer joint better after storms; Kalmia the descending neuralgia with the heart.
Spigelia anthelmiaNeuralgic painsSpigelia's are left-sided, stitching, pulse-synchronous; Kalmia's descend and shift.
Cactus grandiflorusHeartCactus is the iron band; Kalmia the rheumatic heart behind the wandering pains.
Colchicum autumnaleRheumatismColchicum's joint is untouchable and autumnal; Kalmia's is descending and shifting.
Safety. Joint pains with a racing or fluttering heart need urgent assessment — acute rheumatic fever is rare now but serious; severe neuralgia needs review.
