Phosphorus
Made from elemental phosphorus — the glow-in-the-dark element of matches and metabolism, and one of the great bleeding and nervous-system remedies of the classics.
The whole picture, in one breath
Think of the tall, slender, sensitive person — open-hearted, sympathetic to everyone's pain, startled by thunder and the dark, craving ice-cold water that is vomited the moment it warms in the stomach, with easy bleeding of bright red blood, and electric restlessness of the senses. Sympathy, cold drinks, bleeding and sensitivity: that is Phosphorus.
The substance, in plain words
Phosphorus is an element that burns with an eerie light — hence 'phosphorescence'. It is also the backbone of every cell: ATP energy currency, DNA, bone mineral, cell membranes. White phosphorus is a violent poison and the old match industry's curse ('phossy jaw'); the body cannot live without the element. Few remedies straddle poison and nutrient so completely.
The traditional picture Classical sources
The inner state
- Open sympathy. The classical type feels others' pain, weeps at others' troubles, fears being alone and thunder, startles at sudden noise.
- Restless sensitivity. Senses too acute — light, sound, odours, touch; a nervous electric irritability.
- Anxiety for the future. Fear of death, disease and impending misfortune at twilight; dread when alone.
The body
- The cold-drink keynote. Craves ice-cold water, drinks often, and characteristically vomits it as soon as it warms in the stomach.
- Easy bleeding. Bright-red blood from any orifice — nose, gums, lungs, stomach, rectum; the great haemorrhagic remedy of the books.
- Lungs and chest. Tight chest, pneumonia states worse lying on the left side; hoarseness; the classical laryngitis and chest remedy.
- Twilight aggravation. Worse as daylight fades — cough, fever, anxiety all rise at dusk.
- Burning pains. Burning of hands, spine, stomach; hunger soon after eating with empty feeling.
- Left-side lying intolerance. Cannot lie on the left side; palpitations from it.
Modalities (worse and better factors)
| Worse from ⬇ | Better from ⬇ |
|---|---|
| twilight; thunder and sudden noise; lying on the left side; warm food and drink; mental exertion. | cold food and drink; open air; sleep; rubbing and magnetism (classical). |
Where it acts (organ affinities)
Nerves and senses, lungs and blood (haemorrhage), stomach, spine, circulation.
Where the classical picture comes from
Phosphorus poisoning was legendary in the match industry: garlic-smelling breath, vomiting, glowing vomitus, jaundice, and the rotting jawbone of 'phossy jaw'. Elemental-phosphorus provings added the burning, bleeding, cold-drink picture. The remedy's portrait is half industrial-poisoning record, half portrait of the element the body cannot do without.
The substance in real medicine Pharmacology
What this section is: the pharmacology and toxicology of the source substance. It is not clinical evidence that a homeopathic preparation of it treats any condition. What controlled trials do and do not show is set out on the Evidence page.
Phosphorus is genuinely indispensable: as phosphate it forms ATP, DNA backbones and hydroxyapatite bone. White phosphorus remains a dangerous poison and incendiary; red phosphorus makes safety matches. Therapeutically, phosphorus compounds are real drugs — phosphate binders in kidney disease, phosphate infusions in deficiency. The element's dual nature, essential nutrient at trace levels and violent toxin at excess, is precisely what makes its classical portrait so vivid.
Look-alikes (how the classical authors told it apart)
| Remedy | Looks similar because… | Tells it apart because… |
|---|---|---|
| Arsenicum album | Burning, anxiety, restlessness | Arsenicum is chilly with small sips; Phosphorus is thirsty for ice water, bleeding-prone and sympathetic. |
| Lachesis | Left-side intolerance, hot flushes | Lachesis is left-sided and worse after sleep; Phosphorus is worse lying left and loves cold drinks. |
| China officinalis | Weakness after fluid loss | China follows loss of blood or fluids with gas and bloating; Phosphorus bleeds and burns. |
| Cina maritima | Children's irritability, grinding | Cina is the cross, wormy child; Phosphorus is the sensitive, thirsty, bleeding-prone one. |
