Baryta carbonica
Made from barium carbonate — the heavy element's white salt, and the classical remedy of the backward, dwarfish, glandular child.
The whole picture, in one breath
Think of the child who cannot catch up: small for age, slow to speak and understand, large and swollen-looking glands in a scrawny neck, shyness that borders on hiding, repeated tonsillitis, and the sense that time has left this one behind. The backward, glandular child: that is Baryta carbonica.
The substance, in plain words
Barium carbonate is the white salt of a heavy element — in crude form a genuine poison, its soluble salts dangerous. The proving gave the remedy the library's portrait of delayed development: the child behind his age, the swollen glands, the shy hiding face — read today, a photograph of the pre-vaccination, pre-nutrition paediatrics.
The traditional picture Classical sources
The inner state
- Backwardness and shyness. The keynote of the mind: slow to understand, slow to speak, hides behind the mother, fears strangers.
- Irritability of the slow. Cross, obstinate, worse from being examined or tested.
- Fear of strangers. The books note the child's shrinking from strangers — the quoted confirmatory behaviour.
The body
- Swollen glands in a scrawny neck. The keynote: large tonsils and cervical glands on a thin, undergrown frame.
- Dwarfish development. Small, undergrown for age — the books' great developmental-delay remedy.
- Repeated tonsillitis. Attack after attack of the throat, quinsy after quinsy, glands never subsiding.
- Old-looking children The books also use it in the reverse portrait — the aged who grow childish.
- Worse cold damp. Wet weather swells the glands further.
- Better for rest and warmth Warmth and rest between attacks ease the throat.

Where the classical picture comes from
The heavy salt's proving gave the backward-child portrait; the remedy became the classical companion of the delayed, glandular, shy child of the era — a portrait of the pre-antibiotic, pre-nutrition childhood, before paediatrics had its tools.
The substance in real medicine Pharmacology
What this section is: the pharmacology and toxicology of the source substance. It is not clinical evidence that a homeopathic preparation of it treats any condition. What controlled trials do and do not show is set out on the Evidence page.
Barium's real chemistry is industrial and toxicological — its soluble salts poison the heart, its insoluble carbonate is inert — and no drug came of it. The children it portrayed — the swollen tonsils, the delayed development — are today paediatrics' territory: adenotonsillectomy for the throat, growth-hormone and nutrition science for the delay, special education for the slowness. The portrait is a record of what medicine has since learned to help.
Look-alikes (how the classical authors told it apart)
| Remedy | Looks similar because… | Tells it apart because… |
|---|---|---|
| Calcarea carbonica | Sweaty, glandular children | Calc-carb is the sour-sweating, egg-craving plump child; Baryta the scrawny, backward, shy one. |
| Tuberculinum bovinum | Repeatedly infected child | Tuberculinum is the repeatedly-infected, air-craving one; Baryta the swollen-glanded, backward one. |
| Silicea | Glands and weakness | Silicea is the fine-boned, sweaty slow-healer; Baryta the delayed, tonsil-swollen one. |
| Aethusa cynapium | Infant intolerance | Aethusa is the milk-vomiting stupor; Baryta the slow, glandular childhood that follows. |
