Causticum
Made by Hahnemann himself from slaked lime and bisulphide of sulphur — his 'burned' preparation, and the classical voice of injustice and gradual paralysis.
The whole picture, in one breath
Think of the person who cannot bear injustice — weeps at others' suffering, burns with sympathy for the wronged — while the body slowly stiffens: hoarse voice worse in the morning, a creeping paralysis of face or bladder, warts on the fingers, and the odd relief of chronic complaints in damp weather. Sympathy with injustice, morning hoarseness, slow paralysis: that is Causticum.
The substance, in plain words
Hahnemann's Causticum was his own preparation — a solution of bisulphide of sulphur in slaked lime, evaporated to a semi-solid. It is essentially a preparation of calcium polysulphides — chemically a sulphur-lime compound, and the only major remedy that is the founder's private chemistry.
The traditional picture Classical sources
The inner state
- Sympathy and injustice. The keynote of the mind: intense feeling for others' suffering, anger at injustice, weeping at the fate of the persecuted.
- Anxious foreboding. Fear something bad will happen, worse evening and night; dread of the future.
- Restless melancholy. Gloom with fidgetiness; long-suffering temperament worn down by care.
The body
- Morning hoarseness. The famous symptom: voice lost or hoarse on waking, improving as the day goes on.
- Gradual paralysis. Slowly advancing loss of power — face, eyelids, throat, bladder, rectum — with stiffness and contraction.
- Urinary and stool retention. Weak bladder, involuntary urine on coughing; stubborn constipation with inactivity of the rectum.
- Warts and skin growths. The classical wart remedy, especially warts near the nails and on the fingers.
- Throat raw and tickling. Raw, scraped sensation; cough better for cold drinks
- Better in damp weather. A striking modality: chronic rheumatic and paralytic complaints ease in wet weather — the reverse of most remedies.
Modalities (worse and better factors)
| Worse from ⬇ | Better from ⬇ |
|---|---|
| dry cold wind; clear fine weather; emotion and sympathy; clear fine weather; anger. | damp weather; cold drinks; warmth of the bed. |
Where it acts (organ affinities)
Nervous system (motor paralysis), larynx and voice, urinary organs, skin (warts), throat.
Where the classical picture comes from
The preparation's alkaline-sulphur chemistry irritated nerves and mucous membranes in provings; the paralysis picture grew from the tonic-spasmodic action the old clinicians observed. Its mental keynote of injustice came straight from the provers' emotional storms.
The substance in real medicine Pharmacology
What this section is: the pharmacology and toxicology of the source substance. It is not clinical evidence that a homeopathic preparation of it treats any condition. What controlled trials do and do not show is set out on the Evidence page.
The calcium-sulphur chemistry of Causticum belongs to the same family as the sulphide preparations of the old pharmacopoeias — irritant, keratolytic, antiparasitic. The conditions it portrayed — progressive hoarseness, facial palsy, bladder weakness — are today the territory of neurology and ENT medicine, where such symptoms always deserve proper diagnosis.
Look-alikes (how the classical authors told it apart)
| Remedy | Looks similar because… | Tells it apart because… |
|---|---|---|
| Cuprum metallicum | Spasm and cramps | Cuprum is acute spasm with blue face; Causticum is slow paralysis with morning hoarseness. |
| Staphysagria | Suppressed anger, sensitivity | Staphysagria's anger is humiliation and silent indignation with urinary consequences; Causticum's is burning sympathy at injustice with paralysis. |
| Phosphorus | Hoarseness, sympathy | Phosphorus is sensitive and bleeding-prone with twilight aggravation; Causticum is injustice-driven with morning voice loss. |
| Graphites | Warts, skin | Graphites' warts come with oozing sticky eczema; Causticum's with paralysis and hoarseness. |
