Iodum
Made from iodine — the element of the thyroid and the tincture of every army, whose deficiency and excess are both textbook medicine, and the classical remedy of wasting heat.
The whole picture, in one breath
Think of a furnace that burns its own house: ravenous hunger with progressive emaciation, heat that pours off the body, a heart that races and trembles, glands that swell everywhere, and restlessness that cannot settle — the portrait of the over-driven metabolism. Ravenous wasting with heat: that is Iodum.
The substance, in plain words
Iodine is the violet element of the sea and the thyroid — without it, no thyroid hormone is made; with too much, the gland over-fires. It disinfected the wounds of every army of the nineteenth century, dyes its number in the laboratory, and holds the thyroid's whole story in one atom.
The traditional picture Classical sources
The inner state
- Anxiety and hurry. Restless, anxious, worse in the quiet hours; the books paint a hurried, fretful mind.
- Irritability. Cross, worse from heat and from contradiction.
- Fear of evil. Anxious foreboding, worse when alone.
The body
- Ravenous hunger with wasting. The keynote: eats enormously yet wastes away — the hypermetabolic portrait.
- Heat and sweat. Profuse heat, warm skin, worse in warm rooms and the bed.
- Racing heart and tremor. Palpitations, trembling hands, the racing pulse of the over-driven system.
- Glands swell everywhere. Thyroid, tonsils, breasts, testes — every gland enlarges in the books' Iodum picture.
- Emaciation of the neck The neck glands and the thyroid dominate the portrait.
- Worse warmth and rest. Heat aggravates, cold air relieves — the hot remedy in the family of chillies' opposites.
Modalities (worse and better factors)
| Worse from ⬇ | Better from ⬇ |
|---|---|
| warmth and warm rooms; night; rest; suppressed discharges. | cold air; motion; open air. |
Where it acts (organ affinities)
Thyroid and metabolism, glands everywhere, heart and circulation, nutrition.
Where the classical picture comes from
The proving of the element gave the over-driven portrait — heat, hunger, wasting, gland-swelling — which the old clinicians matched to the strumous, wasting, restless constitutions of the goitre belt, before the thyroid had a name in the books.
The substance in real medicine Pharmacology
What this section is: the pharmacology and toxicology of the source substance. It is not clinical evidence that a homeopathic preparation of it treats any condition. What controlled trials do and do not show is set out on the Evidence page.
Iodine is one of medicine's most consequential elements: iodised salt ended goitre and cretinism across whole continents — one of preventive medicine's cheapest, greatest triumphs; radioactive iodine now treats thyroid cancer; and iodine tincture still disinfects. Both its deficiency (hypothyroidism) and excess (iodism, thyrotoxicosis) remain live textbook medicine — the element that must be dosed exactly right.
Look-alikes (how the classical authors told it apart)
| Remedy | Looks similar because… | Tells it apart because… |
|---|---|---|
| Arsenicum iodatum | Heat, glands, wasting | Ars-iod is hot and anxious with the Arsenicum fear; Iodum is the pure furnace — hunger, heat, glands. |
| Lycopodium clavatum | Hunger, debility | Lycopodium is hungry and bloated at 4–8 p.m.; Iodum hungry and wasting with heat. |
| Kali iodatum | Iodides, glands, heat | Kali-iod sweats hot with wandering bone pains; Iodum wastes with racing hunger. |
| Spongia tosta | Thyroid region, dryness | Spongia is the dry throat-and-thyroid remedy; Iodum the metabolic furnace. |
