Spongia tosta
Made from roasted sea sponge — the old iodine source whose mineral chemistry made it the classical larynx-and-throat remedy.
The whole picture, in one breath
Think of a dry, sawing, barking cough like a saw through wood: absolutely no mucus, throat and larynx dry as bark, waking with a suffocating sensation as if breathing through a sponge, better for warm food and drink. Dry barking croup, worse before midnight, better warmth: that is Spongia.
The substance, in plain words
Sea sponge is a living filter of calcium and iodine — roasted, it was the original commercial source of iodine in the nineteenth century, before seaweed took over. The remedy is prepared from the roasted sponge; its mineral chemistry gives a genuine bridge to thyroid and iodine medicine.
The traditional picture Classical sources
The inner state
- Anxiety of suffocation. Fear and anxiety with the choking sensation; starting up in fright.
- Irritability before the cough. Cross, whining, worse evening when the cough begins.
- Fear at night. Dread of the approaching night because the cough comes then.
The body
- Dry barking croup. The keynote: a hard, dry, barking, sawing cough with total absence of mucus — the classical croup remedy.
- Awakes suffocating. Starts up from sleep with a sensation of obstruction, grasping the throat.
- Better for warm food and drink. Warm drinks, warm food and warmth generally ease the larynx — a key differential.
- Worse before midnight. The aggravation comes in the evening and up to midnight, then eases.
- Thyroid and throat region. Sensation of plug in the throat; enlarged thyroid; chronic hoarseness.
- Heart region. The old books record palpitation and anxious heart-sensations, fitting the iodine story.
Modalities (worse and better factors)
| Worse from ⬇ | Better from ⬇ |
|---|---|
| cold dry wind; before midnight; lying with head low; talking; cold drinks. | warm food and drink; sitting up; warmth to the throat. |
Where it acts (organ affinities)
Larynx and trachea, throat, thyroid region, heart (classical).
Where the classical picture comes from
The roasted-sponge proving gave the dry sawing cough and throat-plug sensations; in an era when croup and diphtheria filled winter nights, Spongia earned its place beside Aconite and Hepar in the acute chest trio of the classical books.
The substance in real medicine Pharmacology
What this section is: the pharmacology and toxicology of the source substance. It is not clinical evidence that a homeopathic preparation of it treats any condition. What controlled trials do and do not show is set out on the Evidence page.
Sponge was the industrial source of iodine before kelp, and iodine — in controlled doses — is one of the most consequential medicines ever known: it prevents goitre and cretinism worldwide and is essential to every thyroid hormone. Spongia's classical thyroid-and-throat territory sits exactly where real iodine pharmacology lives.
Look-alikes (how the classical authors told it apart)
| Remedy | Looks similar because… | Tells it apart because… |
|---|---|---|
| Drosera rotundifolia | Violent cough | Drosera is gagging and paroxysmal, worse after midnight lying; Spongia is dry and sawing, worse before midnight, better warm drinks. |
| Aconitum napellus | First-stage croup with fear | Aconite is the sudden frightened onset with fever; Spongia the established dry barking stage. |
| Hepar sulphuris | Croupy cough, chilly | Hepar is loose, rattling, chilly and touchy; Spongia is dry as bark and warmth-loving. |
| Rumex crispus | Dry cough | Rumex is a throat-tickle cough worse for breathing cold air; Spongia is the deep laryngeal saw. |
