Zincum metallicum

Made from zinc — the metal of galvanised roofs and sunscreens, an essential micronutrient, and the classical remedy of restless nerves.

The whole picture, in one breath

Think of nerves that will not be still: feet moving constantly under the desk, legs jerking in bed, twitching of single muscles, mind fidgeting over trifles, worse when the flow of any discharge is checked — and easing the moment it is restored. Restlessness, twitching, suppressed-discharge-worse: that is Zincum.

The substance, in plain words

Zinc is one of the commonest metals of daily life — galvanising, batteries, sunscreen — and one of the body's essential trace elements, needed for immunity, skin, wound healing and nerve function. The proving and smelter poisonings supplied the portrait: trembling, restlessness, and sensitivity to suppressed secretions.

Where the classical picture comes from

Zinc-workers' poisoning gave the trembling restlessness; provings added the sensitivity to suppressed flow. Clinically the remedy attached to two great observations of the era: skin eruptions driven inward by bad management, and nervous sequelae of checked secretions.

The substance in real medicine Pharmacology

What this section is: the pharmacology and toxicology of the source substance. It is not clinical evidence that a homeopathic preparation of it treats any condition. What controlled trials do and do not show is set out on the Evidence page.

Zinc is genuinely essential: deficiency causes dermatitis, diarrhoea, hair loss and poor immunity — the classic acrodermatitis-enteropathica of zinc-starved children. Zinc lozenges and supplements are widely used for colds and wounds with mixed evidence; zinc toxicity is real too. The element's modern story is nutrition, plain and documented.

Look-alikes (how the classical authors told it apart)

RemedyLooks similar because…Tells it apart because…
Kali phosphoricumNervous exhaustionKali-phos is dull and grey with rest; Zinc is restless and twitchy.
Tarentula hispanaRestlessnessTarentula dances and is better for music; Zinc fidgets and is better when discharges flow.
Ignatia amaraSuppressed emotionIgnatia is grief with sighs and sobbing; Zinc is fidgeting and twitching from checked flows.
Cuprum metallicumSpasms and twitchingCuprum's spasms cramp and convulse; Zinc's muscles twitch and fidget without true spasm.
Safety. Twitching with confusion, persistent jerking limbs, or a new skin eruption after drugs need medical review; severe restlessness in a child deserves assessment.
